9th National Wildlife Quiz, Dumaguete City
Haring Ibon was invited by the Philippines Biodiversity Conservation Foundation Inc. to host a booth and to support the 9th National Wildlife Quiz held in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. Throughout the 3-day event, a small Haring Ibon booth showcasing our books, graphic tees, and merchandise was set up at the Lamberto L. Macias Sports & Cultural Complex, the venue for the National Wildlife Quiz.
It was such an exhilarating time to see high school students across the country, from Ilocos to Zamboanga, showcase their love and knowledge of Philippine Wildlife on a national stage with this year's National Wildlife Quiz! With lots of easy, tricky, and mind-bending questions throughout the 5 hours of the Wildlife Quiz, we can't help but be amazed by these students' performance. Himamaylan National High School from Negros Occidental clinched the top position of the National Wildlife Quiz.
Before the quiz proper, Haring Ibon's very own Vinz Pascua and Djop Tabaranza gave brief talks to prepare the participants for the upcoming event. Vinz gave an introduction to Philippine Birds and the Birds of Negros Island, while Djop introduced our Discovery Cards for the next day's activity.
On the final day of the 9th National Wildlife Festival, we introduced the Haring Ibon Discovery Cards to our participants! We organized a fun and simple card game that allowed students and teachers to learn more about various bird species. The game mechanics focused on the conservation status, size, abundance, and distribution of each bird. The new Haring Ibon Discovery Cards are the long-awaited successor to our previous Haring Ibon Trading Cards. They feature a sleeker, sturdier, and more environmentally friendly packaging design, along with improved photographs, new artworks, and updated information based on the 2025 AviList for each bird species.
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the students and teachers who had the chance to try out our Discovery Cards! We hope you enjoy your decks not only as collectibles but also as a fun learning tool for students, teachers, and birders—both in the classroom and in the field—to help identify Philippine birds.
After our Discovery Cards activity, we handled a mini birding sortie with the student participants of the National Wildlife Quiz over at Balinsasayao Twin Lakes Natural Park. Bird Finders Djop, Vinz, and Rico supervised all the students as they spotted some of the Avian wonders of Twin Lakes. Some of the birds that they saw include the Magnificent and Maroon-naped Sunbirds, Balicassiaos, Grey-streaked Flycatcher, Yellowish White-eyes, and the mascot of the National Wildlife Quiz, the elusive Visayan Hornbill.
